Job Description

Job Title: Manager, Drilling & Completions RQ #18-02

TAQA North currently has an opportunity for a Manager, Drilling & Completions reporting to the Vice President, Production & Operations.  The Manager, Drilling & Completions will provide leadership and “hands-on” management to a multi-disciplined drilling and completions team.  They will ensure that all wells are drilled and completed in a safe, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.  They will provide technical oversight and operational expertise for all drilling and completion activities and champion TAQA’s Commitment to Operational Excellence within the drilling and completions team.

As part of this challenging role you will specifically be responsible for:

  • Managing a staff of drilling and completion professionals by providing technical oversight on drilling and completion designs, equipment selection, cost estimating and application of new technology
  • Providing operational expertise, management and coordination of drilling and completions superintendents
  • The effective implementation of TAQA’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSSE) Management System
  • Project planning in close collaboration with the Asset Development teams including regulatory requirements and scheduling
  • Project execution including cost control and review of daily performance
  • Development of staff, providing clear roles and responsibilities, development planning and performance management
  • Keeping pace with new industry technologies and recommend enhancements to optimize performance
  • Ensuring procurement requirements are in keeping with technical and commercial needs and are compliant with SCM policies and guidelines.  Ensuring contractual performance obligations are met
  • Coordinating lessons learned and best practices look backs to ensure continuous improvement
  • Promoting continuous improvement of health, safety and environmental performance
  • Providing technical support and leadership for corporate emergency response team

People Leadership

  • Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project team members and contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work
  • Seek feedback on team and staff performance and conduct annual performance planning and reviews with direct reports to ensure alignment and delivery of TAQA and development objectives
  • Participate in staffing matters as required such as recruiting and performance calibration
  • Model TAQA values and collaborate with other TAQA groups and teams for overall TAQA success
  • Provide technical guidance and/or support to other areas of the organization as required
  • Engage in constructive, respectful debate to achieve optimal results for TAQA
  • Identify needs and opportunities for staff and support staff engagement

Qualification Requirements:

  • Professional Engineer with 15+ years of industry experience in Drilling & Completions, including recent horizontal and sour experience within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin
  • Demonstrated ability to create an environment that fosters innovation, team work, continuous  improvement and  learning
  • Direct experience with HSSE Management Systems and Risk Assessments
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and sound judgment in dealing with emergencies. Ability to act as an expert resource in well control or other operationally challenging problem situations, and proficiency with Incident Command Processes and procedures
  • Proven mentoring skills and the ability to train and motivate staff
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills including highly effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong PC skills, proficient with Pason, Wellview,  and familiar with frac modelling software
